How to Make Time for Yourself as a Mom During School Break

When school is in, we sometimes dream about the “free time” we’ll get once the holidays start. But the reality is often the opposite. Kids are home all day, routines are different, and suddenly your personal time feels like it’s gone.

It’s not selfish to want a little space for yourself, even during school break. In fact, it can help you be more patient, present, and energetic for your family. The trick is to be intentional about it.

Plan Small Moments, Not Big Ones

During school break, waiting for a full day to yourself might never happen. Instead, aim for smaller pockets of time.

Maybe you wake up 20 minutes earlier to drink your tea in peace before the house gets busy. Or you let the kids watch a short movie in the afternoon while you take a shower and read a few pages of a book.

Small moments add up, and they’re more realistic than trying to block out an entire afternoon.

Swap Favours with Another Mom

If you have a trusted friend, cousin, sister or neighbour, consider doing a child swap. One day you take the kids for a few hours, the next day she returns the favour.

It doesn’t have to be fancy. Children can play in the yard, do art, or even help cook. It’s a low-cost way to give each other time without paying for babysitting.

Use What’s Around You

In Guyana, we have many simple ways to entertain kids without spending a lot. Community grounds, seawalls, and local parks can keep them busy while you sit nearby and catch your breath.

If they’re old enough, let them ride their bikes with friends while you relax on a bench or call a friend. If they’re younger, join them but keep your activities light so you still feel refreshed.

Set Quiet Time

Even if naps are long gone, you can still have “quiet time” in the day. This can be a one-hour block where children play in their room, colour, or do a puzzle while you do something for yourself.

The first few times, you might have to guide them through it, but once it becomes routine, it’s easier for everyone.

Involve the Kids in Your Activities

Sometimes making time for yourself means including your children in what you enjoy. If you like gardening, invite them to plant a few seeds. If you enjoy cooking, let them help with simple tasks.

It might not be as peaceful as being alone, but it still gives you joy and keeps them engaged.

Making time for yourself as a mom during school break doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It’s about being intentional with the little moments, using your support system, and finding ways to recharge even in a busy home.
