Let’s be honest — August vacation is a mix of joy and stress. The kids are home, the routines are out the window, and if we’re not careful, every day starts to feel like a repeat of “Mom, I’m bored!”
But here’s the good news: You don’t need a big budget to make special memories. You just need a few ideas and maybe a little breeze and sunshine.

Below are 10 simple, free or cheap things you can do with your kids during August vacation right here in Guyana.
1. Picnic at the Botanical Gardens

Pack some sandwiches, fruits, and juice, grab a blanket or sheet, and head to the gardens for a slow, sunny day with the family. There is plenty of space to run and play, ride bikes, and skate if they can. You can also visit the zoo while you’re there and take the kids to feed the manatees. It’s simple but so peaceful!
2. Seawall Sunsets & Evening Walks

The seawall is the perfect spot to burn off energy in the evening breeze. Take the bikes, buy a snow cone, or some coconut water while you watch the sunset. Bonus: It’s 100% free! If you go on a Sunday, you might even catch a live DJ or drum circle.
3. Visit the National Museum

Explore the National Museum or the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology in Georgetown. It’s FREE, educational, and surprisingly fun, especially for curious little minds (you might even learn a few things yourself!)
4. DIY Craft Day

Collect cardboard, fabric scraps, paper rolls, and make a craft bin! Let the kids use their imagination to build, decorate, and create. You can even join them to make family memories.
5. Backyard Camp-Out or Movie Night
Pitch a tent in the backyard or lay out some sheets and fairy lights for a movie under the stars (or right in the living room). Bring out popcorn, hotdogs, and let the kids help “set up” the cinema and pick the movie.
6. Storytime with Grandma or Grandpa
Sit under the house or outside in a hammock and ask the elders to tell old stories about when they were little. Those moments are priceless.
7. Bake or Cook Together

Get the kids involved in the kitchen. Make cookies, cheese rolls, or plantain chips together. It’s a great bonding activity — and the snacks don’t hurt either. 😄
8. Movie Day at Amazonia Mall, Giftland, or MovieTowne

Treat the kids to a family-friendly movie at one of the local cinemas! Amazonia Mall, Giftland Mall, and MovieTowne all offer great movie options during August vacation.
🕹️ Bonus Fun: MovieTowne has a large game arcade filled with exciting games your kids will love before or after the movie. Think: car racing, mini basketball, claw machines, and so much more!
🍦 Don’t forget the ice cream! You can grab a cold treat right at any of these spots to cool down and make the day even sweeter.
9. Library Storytime or Reading Challenge
If your child enjoys reading (or you want them to), create a simple “August Reading Challenge” and visit your local library for new books each week. Reading together is a great indoor bonding moment.
10. Visit a Playpark or Community Center Ground

The kids will absolutely love this. Most playgrounds already have slides, seesaws, and bouncy castles for the kids to play and socialize. The community grounds and school compounds also have open play areas that are safe and clean during the break. Gather some cousins or neighbors. Bring a ball, a bat, and some snacks, and let them go wild. Kids love a friendly cricket match — and they’ll sleep early after too!
